Jenny Pearson
It is with great sadness that I have to report that past
Border Ladies captain, Jenny Pearson sadly passed away on Sunday after a long illness.
Jenny, captain for
two separate terms, was a loyal and enthusiastic supporter of Border Ladies and
Border Girls Golf. She was at the helm
when I joined the committee as junior secretary and in my first year, I
accompanied her as an official to the girls Inter-divisionals at Ballumbie
where her passion for competition was very much in evidence. She provided great encouragement to many of
our up and coming players and took great pride when Martine Pow gained her first
full Scottish International Cap at Royal Porthcawl in 2004, travelling down to
see her play.
In both years of her first term of Captaincy the Border Ladies qualified for
the County Finals - Nairn Dunbar in 2004 and Ranfurly Castle in 2005. She returned to the captaincy in 2010 Jenny enjoyed her golf and the social side that went along with it and indeed wherever she travelled to play, Jenny would undoubtedly be found in the pro shop looking to add to her wardrobe!
A very generous woman, Jenny Pearson will be a great miss to all who knew her.

County finals Hilton Park
The Borders team came third this weekend after winning their final match 5-4 against East Lothian on Sunday. Winning the morning foursomes 2-1 (Julie Birdsall, Carina Bunyan won 1 up and Sharon Paterson & Leanne Wilson won 3&2) the afternoon singles were shared (Danielle Ker won 3&2, Leanne Wilson won 4&3, Judith Anderson won 3&2)
It was a disappointing start against the favourites Angus on Friday, going down in the 3 morning foursomes. The girls rallied with 2 1/2 points from the afternoon (Danielle winning 5&4, Julie, Leanne & Judith all halved).
Julie and Carina scored all the points in Saturday's match against Renfrewshire winning their foursomes 2&1. In the singles Julie won7&6 and Carina halved
The team had a great weekend, I am so proud of them all, their commitment to the job in hand was first class with all members pulling for each other. The caddies Kirsty and Gillian did a great job throughout.
Finally to my 2 sidekicks Denise and Marny I thank you for standing in for me until Sunday afternoon whilst I was otherwise occupied at my daughter's wedding.

Danielle Ker captains Scottish Schoolgirls to victory at Southport
Danielle Ker captained the Scottish school girls team at Southport against the English on Monday. After the morning foursomes the girls were tied at 1 1/2 points each, with Danielle and Emily Dalgetty winning their match 2&1. Scotland girls won 3 1/2 points from the afternoon singles to take their overall match 5 - 4. Danielle won her match 3 &1, the only girl to get 2 points on the day.
Unfortunately the English boys overcame a 4 -2 deficit from the morning foursomes to beat Scotland in 8 of their 12 singles matches to win their match 10-8.

Finals day at The Roxburghe
In the first semi Carina Buyan was 2 up after 4 against Julie Birdsall who fought back winning 4 holes on the bounce to be 2 up after 9, Carina then steadied herself to play par golf eventually winning 4&3
Dani Ker took charge of the second semi-final against Sharon Paterson from the start and after a mistake at the 8th which was rectified with a birdie at 9 she was 4 up at the turn, Sharon won the 10th, they halved the 11th and 12th, Dani then won the 13th to get back to 4 up. Dani lost a ball at 14 which was conceded but a long birdie putt finished the game at the 15th.
So it was an all Roxburghe final with Carina up against Dani. It was a nervy start from both with Carina winning the first with a 5 after Dani had to chip out from the trees. Dani pulled it back to be 1 up after 4, both had excellent birdies at the long 5th, unfortunately Carina missed a couple of short putts which left her 3 down at the turn, she won the 11th after Dani 3 putted. Carina conceded the 13th after having issues with the pond to take Dani to 4 up. Carina pulled it back to 3 after Dani had to take a drop back into the fairway bunker at the 14th after she plugged her ball in the face when trying to get out. The next two holes were halved, Dani won the match at the 16th 3&2
In the bronze championship semi-finals,13 year old Rhea Middlemass (Hawick) put herself into a position to make it 3 in a row by beating Elaine Brotherstone (Lauder) easily 8 & 7. The other match was a close one with June Craig (Selkirk) eventually overcoming Diane Johnstone (Duns) by a hole.
The final between Rhea and June was a one sided affair with Rhea winning on the 13th.

Netta Lawrie
Netta Lawrie |
It is with great sadness that I have to report that BLCGA honorary
member and ex Captain, Netta Lawrie died yesterday in hospital.
Netta, originally from Selkirk, a founder
member of the county and also a Past President of the Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf, supported the county at many matches, championships
and county finals, even as recently as last year she was walking on the course at Stirling
with her close friend Isobel Massie.
Isobel has many fond memories of Netta, one of which was watching her in her
playing days, holing a long putt across the 18th green at Selkirk
which took the Borders into the County Finals for the very first time.
She was a lovely woman who had a kind word for everyone. She will be sorely missed by all those who were lucky enough to know her.

Friendly vs Midlothian at Newbattle
It turned out a really good although blustery day for the few of us who were available to play against Midlothian at Newbattle yesterday. It stayed dry and many thanks to Midlothian and Newbattle Golf Club for their hospitality.
Sharon Paterson & Fiona Ker were first out against Louise Fraser & Kate McKintosh, Borders were 2 up after 9 but a fightback by Midlothian reversed that score. The match was eventually lost 2&1
Judith Anderson & Marny Waddell (super-sub) had a great game against Rachel Livingstone & Emily Dalgetty and were 3 up with only a few holes to play, they managed to hold on to win 2&1
Our only junior, Rebecca McDonald, joined the
Midlothian junior squad for some match play practice, she was paired up with Sophie Aitchison against Alison Lamond & Lisa McPherson, unfortunately Rebecca (right) & Sophie were beaten 5&4.
