SOUTH DIVISION COUNTY JAMBOREE 2019

All roads led to Thornhill Golf Club in Dumfriesshire at the weekend for the Border Ladies competing in the South Division County Jamboree.

First up on Sunday we played Galloway. The weather was kind if a little Breezy and the course was in excellent condition. The morning foursomes were closely fought. Julie and Orla lost 6&5 in the opening match followed by Tara and Leanne winning their match 5&3. Sharon and Kirsty went down fighting in a close match only to be beaten 3&2.

The afternoon singles yielded 2 points for the team - Fiona having been well down early on in her match showed great fighting spirit to turn her match round and win a point by 1 hole. Tara went out last and was taken right to the wire by Ailsa Brannock and won her point by 1 hole. The other matches were close affairs with some excellent golf being played. However, we ended up losing the day 6-3.

Monday morning dawned with the rain gods hovering over us not to mention the thunder and lightning where we played Dumfriesshire who had soundly beaten Galloway on the opening day.

Play was halted after a few holes in the morning due to the threat of lightning. However, after a brief delay the matches resumed and a great performance from Kirsty and young Orla yielded the only point of the morning where squeegee’s were the order of the day in the closing stages of that match due to a torrential downpour of biblical proportions. Great effort from all to get the games completed not least the Dumfriesshire captain who got soaked to the skin and needed the assistance of the tumble dryer in the Clubhouse afterwards.

After lunch the rain relented thankfully and the afternoon matches were again tightly contested. Tara got the first point on the board in an excellent match with ex professional Corisande Lee winning by 3&1. Leanne brought the other point home showing steely resolve to win her match 1 up.

Special mention must go to Orla who looks a player of the future she went down fighting against last years Scottish Ladies Champion Gemma Batty only to be denied by the narrowest of margins. The overall score in the match was 6-3 in favour of Dumfriesshire who won the Jamboree and will now advance to the County finals which will be held at Peebles later on in the year. We wish them the best of luck.

I would just like to thank everyone involved Players / Caddies and supporters for all their help in my first year as County Captain it really was much appreciated and I could not have done it without all your support and I look forward to next year’s event which will be held on home soil at Minto.

Special mention to Thornhill Golf club for looking after us so well and keeping us fed and watered.

Thankyou

Claire

A fantastic weekend with great team spirit and the best caddies.  It didn't all go our way but we did the Borders proud.

The weather played its part on Monday with the foursomes being called in early due to thunder and lightening.  They returned to the course but had to cope with torrential rain towards the end of the round.
